GLADIOLAS (GLADS)

"Gladiolus" comes from the latin word meaning sword, which discribes
the shape of the leaves, but the gladiola flower is what makes this plant so attractive.
The flowers come in a very wide range of colors. Some have descriptive names like firelight,
purple flame and easter parade. Gladiolas, or "glads" for short, bloom in the summer and are
great as cut flowers, too. Glads are often used for summer wedding arrangements.
Gladiola plants come in a wide range of heights, from 15 inches to 6 feet
tall. Plant the corms in fertile, well-drained soil and choose a location where they are
protected from strong winds. This is very important for the tall gladiolas. For a formal
display, plant the bulbs in groups. You may choose to plant all one color of glads,
or mix them.
