The amaryllis is believed to have originated from the Andes Mountains in South America and was named after a shepherdess in Greek mythology. The flowers are large, bell-shaped,and the most comon colors are white, pink, salmon and red. Amaryllis bulbs and can be grown in the garden in warmer climates or in containers.

In cooler climates, amaryllis are often grown indoors in pots, especially around Christmas time. The plants are fairly tall, ranging in height from 18-24 inches (45-60 cm). An excellent project for children is to plant the bulb and chart the height daily of the amaryllis plant. They grow rapidly and produce beautiful, delicate, lily-like blooms. After blooming, the amaryllis bulb can be saved to bloom again.
