How to Plant Crocuses in the Grass
Crocuses are ideal bulbs to plant in your lawn because they bloom early and have usually finished
when it is time to mow the lawn. The lawn fertilizer is fine for the bulbs too. Growing
plants in a natural setting like this is
known as "naturalizing" and crocuses are ideal for this.
There are a few different ways to do this. You may plant the bulbs before seeding
a new area for lawn, but if you have an existing lawn, you can still plant the bulbs. For
planting a single crocus bulb, use a trowel or bulb planter. Remove a plug of grass with soil
attached to the appropriate depth (approximately 3 times the height of the bulbs), insert the
bulb with the pointed end up and then replace the soil plug and water. It's that easy. However,
if you have many bulbs, this will take some time.
For a group of bulbs, use a spade and fold back a section of the turf to the correct depth.
Loosen the soil, place the bulbs, replace the grass, firmly push into place and water. Give
it a try and I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.
Happy gardening!
