Plants that are Poisonous to Pets

dog

Pets will sometimes chew on plants in the garden when they are bored. Make sure your pet has enough exercise and stimulation so he doesn't get anxious and start investigating the plants. There are sprays you can purchase that will repel dogs and cats or you can try making your own. Spray your plants with a mixture of lemon juice diluted with water. Your pet won't like munching on something sour. However, some dogs will eat almost anything.

You should be aware that many common garden plants are toxic to pets if eaten. Poisonous plants include:

  • lily of the valley
  • hyacinths
  • iris
  • begonias
  • daffodils
  • hydrangea
  • tulips
  • narcissus
  • foxgloves

Ask your vet for a full list. Common signs of poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, listlessness, increased swallowing/drooling, breathing problems, stumbling, inability to stand up, abnormal pulse rate, muscle tremors, convulsions. Signs may be delayed by hours or days after ingestion and the pet may exhibit some of the signs, not all. If you notice any signs that your pet is ill and suspect poisoning, call a vet and the poison control center at 1-800-548-2423.
