How to Plant Flower Bulbs
Plant spring-flowering bulbs anytime in the fall and plant
summer-flowering bulbs, in the spring. Plant fall-flowering bulbs from late
spring to late summer. This is the general rule of thumb. However, you may modify
this a little and still have success. For example, you may plantspring-blooming bulbs
in the spring, but they will then flower later than usual.
Soil should be prepared by spading to a depth of about 10 inches.
Mix well-rotted compost and a little bonemeal into the soil and mix well. Let it settle
for a few days before planting.
Lay the bulbs over the soil and space according to package directions.
Smaller bulbs may be placed closer together than large bulbs. A general guide is to plant
the bulbs to a depth of 3 times the plant diameter. Plant the bulb with the pointed
end facing up. After planting, water the area if it
is dry. However, do not overwater because some bulbs may rot if left very wet for a long period
of time. It is a good idea to mark where you have planted
your bulbs by inserting a labelled stake. This will also remind you exactly what
has been planted in this area. These are general guidlines only. Be sure to check the package
for specific directions for your bulbs and this will ensure success.
